When you drop big coin on a pricey, hospital quality filter you can expect perfection in performance and air quality. When you spend $75-$125 like I did on this air filter then you get what you pay for. This medium room purifier with "HEPA Type" filters is said to be about 95% effective at removing air born allergens. The two HEPA type filters are permanent along with the secondary outer carbon filter for bigger air particles. The ionizer is also fairly effective at changing the overall smell of the room. If you choose not to have the ion smell you can simply ignore the button that turns that feature on. I've owned this filter for about 3 months now and it will occasionally buzz a little at high speeds. However, with mine it is easily fixed by tapping the top or by adjusting the tightness of the back plate. Low and medium speeds are pretty quite though. It has great dimensions as well making it... Dust, moisture, etc - it virtually all sends her into a sneezing fit. Congestion, stuffy nose, and other annoyances frequent her days. So anything to give some relief is a God-sent. However, I found myself extremely skeptical as to the actual effectiveness of these "air filtration devices". That is - until I spoke to my uncle who owns this same model. He said that it really helped to remove the dusty, musty smell from his living room. This was a gift for her for Christmas 2008, but I had considered one of these last year. I helped her set it up today, and here are the (admittedly) early findings. Pros; 1) VERY easy to set up out of the box. I am not sure what this will mean for the life of the filter, as I have vaccumed it several times and it still looks dirty. However there seems to be less dust in the room and my son says he has less allergy issues at night, so - so far so good. I origninally rated this 4 stars, but would downgrade to 2 stars. I have owned this for almost a year now, the fan now makes an annoying rattling sound that lessens somewhat on the high setting. The 'clean filter' light has come on and stayed on even though I vacuum it weekly. For what I paid I am disappointed in the performance. He's eight years old and suffers from allergies. He woke up every morning sneezing, and with a stuffy nose. I was looking for an alternative to giving him allergy medication every day. We keep it on the desk, right next to his bed. It's incredibly quiet and it has helped his allergies a lot. After about a month of constant use on the medium setting, I vacuumed the filter. It was filty. I was very impressed with how much dust it pulled from the air. This little guy does exactly what it says and works like a charm. Here's why I bought it. I wanted an air cleaner for a medium to small sized room where I keep my cat's litter box. Normally, it doesn't smell, but about the day it's time to change it, I can smell it. Now, I don't want to smell it ever, though I keep my kitty box schedule in tact. Anyway, this air cleaner is so quiet on Whisper Mode that I literally cannot hear it. I even put it in my roommate's bedroom, just to see if she realized it was in there, before moving it to its final destination. She had no clue. The model has 3 speeds, but the Whisper Mode is fine for continuous daily use. Sure, you can turn it up, and you'll hear it's low whirrrrrr, but that's to be expected. Another reason I bought it is that it IS a HEPA quality cleaner. But I don't have to buy replacement... My first impression of the unit was that it was way too big to fit unobtrusively in my living room; however, because the air is pulled in through the front grill and discharged from the top of the unit, I was able to push the purifier up against the wall to save space. The controls are simple to use. I find there to be plenty of options for fan speed (noise control). On the lowest setting I can watch TV at normal volume levels with the unit sitting three feet from me. After leaving the room it's easy to ratchet it up to the TURBO mode which I leave it on most of the time when not using the living areas. I appreciate the indicators which tell you when the filter needs replacing, and roughly where it is at in terms of its lifespan (there are five lights to represent HEPA and pre filter status). I selected this air purifier because it received high marks from Consumer Reports. As CR ratings indicate, it is effective and quiet (relative to other air purifiers I have owned over the years). I was surprised, however, by the quantity and direction (up) of the air flow this unit generates. Even at the lowest setting it produces as stiff a breeze as a portable room fan. We tried moving it around our bedroom but could find no location where the wind didn't bounce off the ceiling and blow on us at night, causing chilliness, dry eyes, and other discomforts. Our solution has been to turn it off at bedtime (which we had done with out previous air purifier because it was so loud). If this schedule works for you, I can recommend the product.
